Winch Launching
Winch launching is a method of launching sailplanes into the air using a stationary winch on the ground. The winch is typically a gasoline or diesel-powered engine that drives a large drum around which a cable is wound. The cable is attached to the sailplane with a hook, and as the winch rotates the drum, the cable is rapidly unwound, pulling the sailplane forward and upward into the air. The sailplane pilot releases the cable at the desired altitude, and then flies the sailplane using natural air currents. Winch launching is a popular and cost-effective method of launching sailplanes, particularly in areas where there are no mountains or other natural features that can be used for launching.
