ATC

ATC, or Air traffic control, is a service provided by ground-based controllers who coordinate the movement of aircraft to ensure that they stay safe distances apart in both the sky and on the ground. This service is essential to the safe and efficient operation of air traffic in and around airports and throughout controlled airspace. ATC responsibilities include separating aircraft to prevent collisions, organizing and expediting the flow of air traffic, providing information and other support for pilots, and alerting emergency services when necessary. Controllers use radar, computers, and visual references to monitor and direct the movement of aircraft. They communicate with pilots via radio to provide navigational guidance and flight information. ATC is divided into three main types: tower control, which manages aircraft on the ground and in the immediate vicinity of the airport; approach and departure control, which manages aircraft within a larger, defined airspace around the airport; and en-route control, which manages aircraft during the majority of their flight.
