Bypass Ratio

Bypass Ratio is the ratio between the mass of air that bypasses the engine core (i.e., that is taken in by the fan and exhausted without passing through the combustion chamber) to the mass of air that passes through the engine core. It is a significant parameter in the design of turbofan engines, which are widely used in commercial aviation. A higher bypass ratio means that a larger amount of air bypasses the engine core, resulting in a quieter and more fuel-efficient engine. Modern commercial aircraft typically have bypass ratios ranging from 5:1 to 10:1.
