Containment System
In the context of aviation, a containment system refers to a safety mechanism designed to prevent the escape of potentially hazardous materials or components during an unexpected event, such as an engine failure. The primary purpose of a containment system is to ensure that in the event of a catastrophic failure, such as a blade-out condition where a blade detaches from the engine, the blade or any other debris does not penetrate the engine casing and cause further damage to the aircraft or injury to passengers. The containment system typically includes a strong casing around the engine, often made of Kevlar or similar high-strength materials, and may also include additional features such as a containment ring or a Kevlar wrap. The design and testing of containment systems are critical aspects of aircraft safety and are subject to stringent regulations and standards set by aviation authorities such as the Federal aviation administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
