Distance Measuring Equipment
Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is a radio navigation system that measures the slant range distance between an aircraft and a ground station by timing the propagation delay of radio signals in the frequency band of 960-1215 megahertz (MHz). DME provides accurate distance information to the pilot, which is displayed on the aircraft's navigation instruments. It is a vital component of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and is used for precision approach and landing. DME is also used for en-route navigation and provides distance information to the pilot for determining the aircraft's position relative to a ground station. DME operates by transmitting a series of pulses to the aircraft, which then replies with a corresponding series of pulses. The time difference between the transmission and reception of the pulses is used to calculate the distance between the aircraft and the ground station.
