Eardrum
The eardrum, also known as the tympanic membrane, is a thin, cone-shaped membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. It plays a crucial role in the process of hearing by vibrating in response to sound waves and transmitting these vibrations to the tiny bones in the middle ear. In aviation, the eardrum is particularly important because changes in air pressure during takeoff and landing can cause discomfort or even pain in the ears. This is why it is recommended to chew gum or swallow during these times to help equalize the pressure in the middle ear.
