Electromagnetic Shielding
Electromagnetic Shielding is the process of reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. In aviation, electromagnetic shielding is used to protect electronic equipment from electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can be caused by various sources such as radio waves, lightning strikes, and solar flares. EMI can cause malfunctions or complete failure of electronic equipment, which can be catastrophic in aviation. Electromagnetic shielding is achieved by enclosing the electronic equipment in a conductive or magnetic shield, or by using special coatings on the equipment. The effectiveness of electromagnetic shielding is measured by the shielding effectiveness (SE), which is the ratio of the electromagnetic field strength outside the shield to the field strength inside the shield.
