ETOPS

ETOPS stands for Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards. It is a set of rules and regulations that allow twin-engine aircraft to fly long-distance routes that were previously only available to aircraft with more than two engines. ETOPS certification is granted by aviation authorities to airlines and aircraft manufacturers after they have demonstrated that their twin-engine aircraft can safely operate for a certain amount of time (usually up to 180 minutes) on one engine in the event of an engine failure. This certification is important for airlines as it allows them to operate more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft on long-haul routes, resulting in cost savings and increased flexibility in route planning.
