Halons
Halons are a group of chemicals that were commonly used as fire extinguishing agents in aviation. They are highly effective in extinguishing fires, especially those involving flammable liquids and electrical equipment. Halons work by interrupting the chemical chain reaction that sustains a fire. However, they have been found to have a detrimental effect on the ozone layer and are therefore no longer used in new aircraft. Existing aircraft that still have halon systems are being phased out and replaced with more environmentally friendly alternatives.
