IATA Airline Code

The IATA Airline Code is a two-character identifier assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to world's airlines. The assignment of these codes is governed by IATA Resolution 762, which provides for the assignment and control of airline codes. These codes are unique to each airline and are used for various purposes including ticketing, reservations, and baggage handling. The codes are also used in timetables, flight reservation systems, and in telecommunications. They are not to be confused with the ICAO airline designators which are three letters long and are more commonly used in air traffic control systems and on flight-tracking websites. The IATA codes were originally based on the two-letter country codes set up by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) but as the number of airlines grew, more codes were needed and some airlines received codes that do not relate to their country of registration.
