ICAO Phonetic Alphabet

The ICAO Phonetic Alphabet, also known as the NATO phonetic alphabet or the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, is a universally recognized system of phonetic alphabet used in aviation to ensure clarity and prevent misunderstandings during voice communication. It was developed by the International civil aviation organization (ICAO) and is used by pilots, air traffic controllers, and others in the aviation industry worldwide. The alphabet assigns a specific word to each letter of the English alphabet, so that critical combinations of letters and numbers can be pronounced and understood by those who transmit and receive voice messages by radio or telephone regardless of language barriers or the quality of the communication channel. For example, the word 'Alpha' represents the letter 'A', 'Bravo' for 'B', and so on. This system is crucial in aviation where miscommunication can lead to serious consequences.
