Ice Crystals

Ice crystals are tiny particles of ice that form in the atmosphere at high altitudes, typically above 20,000 feet. They are formed when water droplets freeze instantly upon contact with an object, such as an airplane's wings or engine. Ice crystals can cause a number of problems for aircraft, including reduced visibility, decreased engine performance, and increased drag. They can also accumulate on the wings and disrupt the flow of air over the surface, leading to a loss of lift and potentially causing the aircraft to stall. Pilots must take precautions to avoid flying through areas of high ice crystal concentration, and aircraft are equipped with de-icing systems to remove any ice that does form.
