Instrument Approach Procedures

Instrument Approach Procedures (IAPs) are a set of predetermined maneuvers for an aircraft to follow in order to transition from the en-route phase of flight to a point where a safe landing can be made using instruments only. IAPs include a series of predetermined altitude, heading, and speed changes that an aircraft must follow to safely descend from the en-route phase of flight to the airport. These procedures are designed to provide pilots with a safe and repeatable method of transitioning from instrument flight to visual flight, or to a safe landing in low visibility conditions.
