Mode S

Mode S (Mode Select) is an aviation surveillance technology used by Air Traffic Control (ATC) and aircraft for automatic dependent surveillance. It allows ATC to identify and track aircraft with greater precision and reliability than traditional radar systems. Mode S transponders on aircraft transmit a unique 24-bit address, which allows ATC to distinguish between individual aircraft and provide more accurate information on their position, altitude, and speed. Mode S also enables other applications such as Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B).
