Runway Overrun Area
A runway overrun area is a designated area at the end of a runway that is prepared to reduce the risk of damage to airplanes or injury to passengers in the event of an aircraft overshooting the runway. The runway overrun area is typically made of materials that are designed to slow down an aircraft that has gone off the runway, such as crushable concrete or other engineered materials. The area may also include safety features such as an Engineered material arresting system (EMAS) or a bed of crushable material that can safely stop an aircraft that has gone off the runway. The purpose of the runway overrun area is to provide a safety buffer for aircraft that are unable to stop on the runway, due to factors such as weather, mechanical failure, or pilot error.
