Engineered Material Arresting System
Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) is a bed of engineered materials built at the end of the runway to stop an aircraft that overshoots or veers off the runway. EMAS is designed to decelerate an aircraft that overruns the runway and prevent it from hitting any obstacles beyond the runway. The system is made up of lightweight, crushable concrete blocks that are placed at the end of the runway. These blocks are designed to crush under the weight of an aircraft, which helps to slow it down. The blocks are also designed to absorb the energy of the aircraft, which helps to prevent it from bouncing back onto the runway. EMAS is an important safety feature that can help to prevent accidents and save lives.
