Runway Safety Areas
Runway Safety Areas (RSAs) are defined surfaces surrounding the runway prepared or suitable for reducing the risk of damage to airplanes in the event of an undershoot, overshoot, or excursion from the runway. RSAs are typically 150 feet wide and extend 1,000 feet beyond each end of the runway. The surface of the RSA is typically made of materials that will support the weight of an airplane and provide a stable surface for rescue and firefighting equipment. The purpose of RSAs is to provide a clear area free of obstacles that can cause damage to an airplane during an overrun or undershoot, and to provide a clear area for rescue and firefighting operations.
