Satellite-based Navigation System

In the context of aviation, a Satellite-based Navigation system refers to a system that uses satellites to provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning. It allows small electronic receivers to determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude) to within a few meters using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites. In aviation, pilots use these systems to navigate their aircraft accurately and efficiently across the globe. The most commonly known system is the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is operated by the United States. However, other systems like Russia's GLONASS, the European Union's Galileo, and China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System are also in operation. These systems are critical in aviation as they provide the necessary data for various flight systems, including the Flight Management System (FMS) and the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, which are essential for flight planning, navigation, and surveillance.
