Satellite Orbits

In the context of aviation, satellite orbits refer to the paths that satellites follow while moving around a planet or celestial body. These orbits are determined by factors such as the satellite's speed, the gravitational pull of the planet, and the altitude at which the satellite is launched. There are several types of satellite orbits used in aviation, each with its own unique characteristics and applications. Geostationary orbits, for instance, are positioned approximately 36,000 kilometers above the Earth's equator and move at the same rotational speed as the Earth, making them appear stationary from the ground. This makes them ideal for weather monitoring and telecommunications. Polar orbits, on the other hand, pass over the Earth's poles on each revolution, providing global coverage and making them useful for earth observation satellites. Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) are used for navigation and communication satellites, as well as for some scientific and technological research satellites. The choice of orbit is crucial as it determines the satellite's function, coverage area, and lifespan.
