Service Module
In the context of aviation, a Service Module refers to a component of a spacecraft that is responsible for the primary support functions necessary for the operation and survival of the spacecraft. These functions typically include propulsion, power generation, thermal control, and life support systems. The Service Module is usually located directly behind the Command Module in a typical spacecraft configuration and is jettisoned prior to re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. In aviation, the Service Module plays a crucial role in ensuring the spacecraft can perform its mission, whether it be a lunar landing, a satellite deployment, or a space station resupply. It houses the spacecraft's engines, fuel tanks, and other critical systems, and is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of space travel, including extreme temperatures, radiation, and the vacuum of space.
