Soaring

Soaring is the art and science of using natural atmospheric forces to gain altitude and stay aloft in a glider or sailplane without an engine. Glider pilots use rising air currents, such as thermals, ridge lift, and wave lift, to climb and fly long distances. Soaring is a popular recreational activity and a competitive sport that requires skill, knowledge, and experience. Gliders are designed to be lightweight, aerodynamic, and efficient in converting potential energy into kinetic energy. Soaring conditions depend on weather patterns, terrain features, and time of day. Glider pilots use instruments, such as variometers, altimeters, and GPS, to navigate and optimize their flights.
