Space Shuttle Orbiter
The Space Shuttle Orbiter, often simply referred to as the 'Orbiter,' is the spacecraft component of the Space Shuttle, a partially reusable orbital spacecraft system that was part of the Space Shuttle program run by NASA. The Orbiter served as both the spacecraft which carried astronauts and payload to space and the reentry vehicle to return to Earth. It was launched vertically and landed horizontally, in a manner similar to a conventional aircraft, a unique feature among spacecraft. The Orbiter was designed to carry large payloads to various orbits, perform on-orbit operations, then reenter and land as a glider, returning its crew and any on-board payload to the Earth. The Orbiter had no propulsion system of its own for landing and was entirely dependent on its speed and altitude after the reentry burn. The Orbiter was the only part of the Space Shuttle that returned to Earth after each mission, and it was reused for future flights.
