Standard Arrival Route

A Standard Arrival Route (STAR) is a published air traffic control procedure used to simplify clearance delivery procedures for aircraft arriving at an airport. It is a pre-defined, standardized route that begins from a specific point (usually a waypoint) and ends at a designated point in the terminal area. The purpose of a STAR is to provide a safe and efficient means of routing arriving aircraft from the en-route phase of flight to the terminal area, while ensuring proper separation between aircraft and expediting their arrival. Pilots are required to follow the published STAR unless otherwise instructed by air traffic control.
