Transition Altitude

Transition Altitude is the altitude at which the aircraft changes from using the local QNH (altimeter setting) to the standard QNH of 1013.25 hPa. This altitude is usually 18,000 feet above mean sea level (MSL) but may vary depending on the location. The transition altitude is important because it ensures that all aircraft in the same airspace are using the same altimeter setting, which is necessary for maintaining safe separation. Pilots climbing through the transition altitude will set their altimeters to 1013.25 hPa, while pilots descending through the transition level will set their altimeters to the local QNH.
