Air Defense Identification Zone

An Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) is an area of airspace defined by a country within which the ready identification, location, and control of aircraft is required in the interest of national security. The purpose of an ADIZ is to allow a country to detect, identify, and respond to aircraft approaching its airspace, particularly those that may pose a threat. Aircraft entering an ADIZ are required to identify themselves and provide flight information to the controlling authority. Failure to comply with ADIZ procedures may result in interception by military aircraft. ADIZs are established unilaterally by countries and are not governed by international law.
