Alternate Airport

An alternate airport is a designated airport to which an aircraft may proceed when it becomes either impossible or inadvisable to proceed to the intended destination. The decision to proceed to an alternate airport may be made before departure or en route due to weather conditions, mechanical problems, or any other emergency situation. The alternate airport must meet certain criteria such as having suitable runway length, appropriate approach aids, and adequate fueling facilities. Pilots must calculate the fuel required to reach the alternate airport and hold for a specified time before proceeding to the destination or returning to the departure airport.
