Approach Lighting Systems
Approach Lighting Systems (ALS) are lighting systems installed on the approach end of an airport runway and are designed to provide visual guidance to pilots during approach and landing. ALS typically consist of a series of light bars, strobe lights, or a combination of both, that extend outward from the runway threshold. The lights are arranged in a specific pattern to provide pilots with information on their position and altitude relative to the runway. ALS can be either a simple system with only a few lights or a complex system with multiple light bars and strobes. The type of ALS installed at an airport depends on the runway's category, approach speed, and visibility requirements.
