Updraft
In aviation, an updraft is a current of rising air that moves in an upward direction. Updrafts are commonly found in areas of thermal activity, such as over hot surfaces or in proximity to mountains. They can also be created by weather fronts or other atmospheric disturbances. Updrafts are important to glider pilots and birds, as they provide lift and allow them to gain altitude without the use of an engine. However, updrafts can also be hazardous to aircraft, particularly during thunderstorms, as they can cause severe turbulence and wind shear.
