Chicago Convention

The Chicago Convention, officially known as the Convention on International Civil Aviation, is a foundational document in the field of international air travel. Signed in 1944 in Chicago, United States, it established the International civil aviation organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations charged with coordinating and regulating international air travel. The Convention sets out principles and arrangements for air services, aircraft registration, safety, security, and environmental protection. It also provides for the sovereignty of each state in the airspace above its territory and the equal opportunity for all states to operate airlines. The Convention has been amended several times to adapt to the evolution of aviation technology and practices. As of today, it has 193 member states, making it one of the most widely recognized international agreements. The Chicago Convention has played a crucial role in the development of civil aviation and the establishment of a global air transport system.
