Chicago Convention On International Civil Aviation
The Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention, is a fundamental international agreement that establishes the principles and arrangements for international air transport. Signed in 1944 by 52 states, it created the International civil aviation organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations charged with coordinating and regulating international air travel. The Convention establishes rules of airspace, aircraft registration and safety, and details the rights of the signatories in relation to air travel. It also exempts air fuels from tax. The Convention's standards, recommended practices, and policies are used by ICAO's member states to ensure that their local civil aviation operations and regulations conform to global norms. The Convention also provides for the peaceful resolution of disputes and sets out the 'five freedoms of the air', a set of commercial aviation rights permitting international air travel.
