In aviation, a distributor is a device that distributes fuel or air to the engine cylinders in the correct firing order. It is a crucial component of the engine's ignition system, ensuring that the fuel-air mixture is delivered to the correct cylinder at the correct time. The distributor consists of a rotor and a cap, which are connected to the engine's camshaft and rotate at half the speed of the crankshaft. As the rotor spins, it passes over contacts in the cap, which are connected to the spark plugs. This sends an electrical charge to the spark plug, igniting the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. Without a properly functioning distributor, the engine may misfire or fail to start.
