Drift Tube
In aviation, a drift tube is a device used to measure the drift angle of an aircraft. It consists of a small tube mounted on the aircraft's wing or fuselage, with a vane inside that is free to rotate. As the aircraft moves through the air, the vane aligns itself with the relative wind, and the angle it makes with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft is measured. This angle is known as the drift angle, and it is used to calculate the aircraft's ground track. Drift tubes are commonly used in navigation and in-flight planning, particularly in areas where wind conditions are variable or unpredictable.
