EMAS System
EMAS (Engineered Materials Arresting System) is a safety system designed to stop an aircraft that overshoots the runway. It is typically made up of lightweight, crushable concrete blocks that are placed at the end of the runway. In the event of an overshoot, the aircraft's wheels sink into the blocks, which then crumble and absorb the aircraft's kinetic energy, bringing it to a stop. EMAS is designed to be a safer alternative to traditional runway overrun areas, which are often made up of gravel or other loose materials that can cause damage to the aircraft or injure passengers and crew. EMAS is typically used at airports where the runway is shorter than ideal or where there are obstacles beyond the end of the runway.
