EMAS

EMAS stands for Engineered Materials Arresting System. It is a bed of engineered materials, typically made of lightweight, crushable concrete blocks, placed at the end of a runway to stop an aircraft that overshoots the runway. EMAS is designed to safely decelerate and stop an aircraft that has overrun the runway, preventing it from crashing into obstacles or terrain beyond the runway. EMAS is an important safety feature for airports that have runways located in areas with limited space or surrounded by obstacles. It is also used as an alternative to traditional runway safety areas, which require more space and can be difficult to implement in some airport locations.
