Flight Level
Flight Level (FL) is a standard altitude reference system used in aviation. It is defined as a vertical height above a standard datum plane, which is the mean sea level (MSL). The FL system is used to ensure vertical separation between aircraft, with each FL representing a specific altitude. In the United States, FLs are measured in feet, while in most other countries they are measured in meters. The transition altitude is the altitude at which aircraft change from using the local altimeter setting to the standard altimeter setting, which is 29.92 inches of mercury or 1013.25 millibars. The transition level is the altitude at which aircraft change from using the standard altimeter setting to the local altimeter setting. The use of FLs allows for more efficient use of airspace and reduces the risk of mid-air collisions.
