Global Warming Potential
In the context of aviation, Global warming Potential (GWP) is a measure of how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere up to a specific time horizon, relative to carbon dioxide. It is a critical concept as the aviation industry contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. The GWP of a gas refers to the total energy that a gas absorbs over a particular period (usually 100 years), compared to carbon dioxide. The higher the GWP, the more the gas warms the Earth compared to CO2 over that time period. The aviation industry is particularly concerned with the GWP of carbon dioxide and water vapor, the primary greenhouse gases emitted by aircraft. The industry is actively seeking ways to reduce these emissions, through more efficient aircraft design, alternative fuels, and operational changes. The GWP is used to compare the effects of different gases to each other and allows for the total greenhouse gas emissions of the aviation industry to be expressed as a single number, usually in terms of CO2 equivalent.
