Ground Proximity Warning Systems
Ground Proximity Warning Systems (GPWS) are aircraft systems that provide aural and visual alerts to pilots when the aircraft is in danger of colliding with the ground. GPWS uses radio altimeter, GPS, and other sensors to determine the aircraft's height above the ground and its rate of descent. If the system detects that the aircraft is descending too rapidly or is too close to the ground, it will issue a warning to the pilots. GPWS is designed to prevent Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents, which occur when an airworthy aircraft, under pilot control, is flown into terrain, water, or obstacles with no apparent awareness on the part of the crew.
