Runway End Safety Area

A Runway End Safety Area (RESA) is a defined surface surrounding the end of a runway prepared or suitable for reducing the risk of damage to airplanes in the event of an undershoot, overshoot, or excursion from the runway. The purpose of a RESA is to provide a clear area free of obstacles and other hazards to reduce the severity of damage to an aircraft in case of an accident. The International civil aviation organization (ICAO) recommends that a RESA should extend at least 90 meters from the end of the runway and be at the same level as the runway surface. The surface of a RESA should be made of materials that will not cause damage to an aircraft and should be able to support the weight of rescue and firefighting vehicles.
