Parasitic Drag

Parasitic drag is the resistance created by the aircraft structure, components, and other nonlifting surfaces to the airflow moving over and around the aircraft. It is caused by the friction and turbulence created between the aircraft and the surrounding air. Parasitic drag increases with the speed of the aircraft and is a major factor in determining the maximum speed an aircraft can achieve. It can be reduced by streamlining the aircraft's shape, smoothing the surface of the aircraft, and reducing the size of any protruding components such as antennas and landing gear.
