Stopway

In aviation, a stopway is an area beyond the takeoff runway that is prepared or suitable for use in decelerating an airplane during an aborted takeoff, or in stopping an airplane that overruns the runway. Unlike the runway, the stopway may not be designed for the structural load of an airplane during takeoff or landing roll. The stopway is a defined rectangular area on the ground, usually centered on the extended centerline of the runway, and it may be either paved or unpaved. The length of the stopway is determined by the aircraft performance requirements and the airport's runway safety area standards.
