ADS-Broadcast

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcasts it, enabling it to be tracked. The information can be received by air traffic control ground stations as a replacement for secondary radar. It can also be received by other aircraft to provide situational awareness and information for collision avoidance. ADS-B is an integral part of the Next Generation Air transportation System (NextGen) and is now being used in many parts of the world. It provides enhanced navigational accuracy, surveillance, and communication over traditional radar systems. ADS-B systems use a data link to transmit a variety of message types including position, velocity, and identification information to other aircraft and to ground stations. The system is 'automatic' because no external interrogation is required, 'dependent' because it relies on on-board navigation sources for position information, and 'broadcast' because the information is transmitted to all aircraft and ground stations within range.
