Velocity
Velocity is the rate of change of an aircraft's position with respect to a frame of reference, usually the ground. It is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction. In aviation, velocity is typically measured in knots or miles per hour (mph). There are several types of velocity that are important in aviation, including indicated airspeed (IAS), true airspeed (TAS), groundspeed (GS), and vertical speed (VS). IAS is the speed shown on the aircraft's airspeed indicator, TAS is IAS corrected for altitude and temperature, GS is TAS corrected for wind, and VS is the rate of change of altitude. Velocity is a critical parameter in flight planning, navigation, and aircraft performance.
