Bernoulli's Principle
In the context of aviation, Bernoulli's Principle refers to a fundamental concept that explains how an aircraft is able to achieve lift. Named after Daniel Bernoulli, a Swiss mathematician and physicist, the principle states that as the speed of a moving fluid (liquid or gas) increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases. In aviation, this principle is applied to the design of an aircraft wing, also known as an airfoil. The airfoil is designed in such a way that air moving over the top surface has to travel a longer distance compared to the air moving below the wing. This causes the air on top to move faster, creating a lower pressure area compared to the higher pressure area below the wing. The difference in pressure results in an upward force known as lift, which enables the aircraft to ascend and maintain flight. Bernoulli's Principle is a fundamental concept in aerodynamics, the study of the motion of air and how it interacts with solid objects, like an aircraft.
