Class E
Class E airspace is designated as controlled airspace that extends upward from either the surface or a designated altitude to the overlying or adjacent controlled airspace. Class e airspace is typically used to transition from controlled to uncontrolled airspace, or to provide an additional layer of controlled airspace. Class e airspace is also used to protect instrument approach procedures and airways that serve airports without an operating control tower. Pilots are required to obtain clearance from air traffic control to enter Class e airspace unless they are operating under instrument flight rules (IFR) and have been cleared for the airspace.
