Crosswind Leg

In aviation, a crosswind leg is a segment of an aircraft's traffic pattern that is flown perpendicular to the runway, in the direction of the crosswind. The purpose of flying a crosswind leg is to compensate for the effect of the crosswind on the aircraft during the landing phase. During the crosswind leg, the pilot maintains a constant distance from the runway while crabbing into the wind to maintain the aircraft's track. Once the aircraft is aligned with the runway, the pilot will turn onto the final approach. The length of the crosswind leg will depend on the wind speed and direction, as well as the aircraft's speed and performance.
