Data Communications
In the context of aviation, Data Communications (Data Comm) refers to the method of communication between the aircraft and air traffic control (ATC) or between various systems within the aircraft itself, using digital information exchange. This system enhances the safety, capacity, and efficiency of the National airspace system (NAS). Instead of traditional voice communications, Data Comm allows ATC instructions to be directly input into the flight management system, reducing the chance of communication errors. It also enables more precise routing, improving flight efficiency and reducing fuel consumption. Data Comm is part of the FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) initiative, aimed at modernizing America's air traffic control system. It is being implemented in phases, with the initial focus on clearances, instructions, advisories, flight crew requests, and reports. The future phases will expand the Data Comm services to include features like digital information exchange during high altitude flights and in-flight rerouting.
