Next Generation Air Transportation System

The Next Generation Air transportation System (NextGen) is an ongoing, wide-ranging transformation of the United States' national airspace system (NAS). It is a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art technologies and procedures that aim to make air travel more convenient, predictable, and efficient. NextGen is designed to ensure that the NAS can safely and efficiently handle a predicted growth in air traffic. It involves the implementation of new technologies such as Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), which allows aircraft to determine their position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcast it, enabling it to be tracked. It also includes the use of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) that allows aircraft to fly on any path within the coverage of ground or space-based navigation aids. NextGen also emphasizes the use of Data Communications (Data Comm) to transition from voice to digital communication, which can enhance safety and efficiency in air traffic management.
