Distress
Distress is a state of being in grave and imminent danger and requiring immediate assistance. In aviation, distress signals are used to indicate that an aircraft, its occupants, or other persons are threatened by grave and imminent danger and require immediate assistance. Distress signals may be transmitted by any means available, such as radio, visual signals, or emergency locator transmitters (ELTs). The most common distress signal used in aviation is the international distress frequency of 121.5 MHz, which is monitored by air traffic control and search and rescue organizations.
