Downwind Leg

In aviation, the downwind leg is a segment of an aircraft's traffic pattern that is parallel to the landing runway, but in the opposite direction of landing. It is typically flown at a constant altitude and airspeed, and is entered after completing the crosswind turn. During this leg, the pilot must maintain a safe distance from the runway and be aware of other aircraft in the vicinity. The downwind leg is an important part of the landing process as it allows the pilot to configure the aircraft for landing, such as lowering the landing gear and flaps, and to establish the appropriate approach speed and descent rate.
