Ground Delay Programs

Ground Delay Programs (GDPs) are air traffic control initiatives used by the Federal aviation administration (FAA) to manage air traffic flow and reduce congestion at airports. GDPs are implemented when there is a high volume of flights scheduled to arrive at an airport and the airport is unable to accommodate all of the flights at their scheduled times. The FAA will issue a GDP to delay flights on the ground at their departure airport, allowing for a more efficient flow of air traffic into the congested airport. The length of the delay is determined by the severity of the congestion and can range from a few minutes to several hours.
